Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
