Team Principal Wolff has led the Mercedes team to record-breaking success in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is engaged in final negotiations to offload part of his shareholding in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who holds a 33% stake of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake in the region of five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The governance of the team will remain unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One."

Financial Increase

The deal signifies a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in market values of F1 teams recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the highest-earning sports movie ever released.

Present Standings

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship.

Their lead driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
