Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, echoing the practice already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
